5 Insurance Preparedness Tips For Travelers

road

There's nothing quite like traveling, especially when you're taking to the open road! Before you get going though, you'll want to make sure you're adequately prepared. Keep reading to learn how to stay ahead of disaster and protect yourself from unnecessary spending.

In addition to the insurance tips outlined below, we advise drivers to keep emergency kits in their vehicles, especially for long trips. A good kit should include a first-aid kit, batteries, flashlights, drinking water, snacks, jumper cables, ice scrapers (or an old credit card works for you Louisianians),  tissues, towels, a tow rope, extra clothing and blankets, as well as mosquito nets/spray/fogger for here in the swamps.

Make sure that important insurance and legal papers are in a secure place that more than one person knows about. Assess personal insurance needs for yourself and your family. Needs for an older adult, for example, could be much different from those of a child or grandchild. It's always better to be totally prepared! **Pro Tip: Don't advertise your trip ahead of time and don't post vacation pics until you're back home!**

We're outlining five important insurance tips for you to consider as you prepare for getting on the road!

1. Know if your auto policy includes roadside assistance, such as towing, fuel delivery, lockout service and jump starts.

Being stuck on the side of the road is not only dangerous, but costly. Make sure that you know who to call if your vehicle breaks down.

2. Confirm your insurance is active and premiums are paid.

Have a current copy of your insurance card on your phone or in your vehicle with you at all times.

3. Select liability limits that are right for your financial circumstances.

If you find yourself at fault in an accident and you have insufficient liability limits, your personal assets are at risk for paying the remaining financial obligation.

4. If you rent a vehicle for a trip, check to see if your policy includes rental coverage

Renting a car? Do you drive like you are in F1 or the Baja 1000? If so,  get rental protection from your rental car company if you are renting a car. Otherwise you can use your own insurance, but remember, it's just like driving your own car-- so no Fast N' Furious shenanigans!

5. Verify that your home or renters insurance policy covers theft of personal items from your vehicle, especially if you are planning to haul more expensive items.

Let's  not keep personal items in your car-- I'm talking to YOU, Houston & NOLA clients! If your car gets broken into, that personal property from your vehicle would be covered on your renters or home insurance policy. We won't ever tell you not to make a claim, but you sure would want to make sure it's significant value of property stolen from before doing so. Best move-- play is safe, don't leave it in there!
