Game Days, Boat Days, and New Drivers: Is It Time for an Umbrella Policy?

Game Days, Boat Days, and New Drivers: Is It Time for an Umbrella Policy?

Fall in south Louisiana fills the calendar fast. There's a tailgate on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, a Ragin' Cajuns home game in Lafayette, the first pot of gumbo once the weather finally breaks, and one more weekend on the water before duck season takes over. More people at your house, more miles in the truck, and more time on the boat all point to something most families rarely think about: liability.

Your homeowners, auto, and boat policies each carry a liability limit. When a serious accident goes past that limit, the difference doesn't disappear. It becomes your problem. That's the gap a personal umbrella policy is built to fill.

What an Umbrella Policy Does

A personal umbrella policy is extra liability coverage that sits on top of the policies you already have. If you're found responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property, your auto or homeowners policy pays first, up to its limit. Once that limit is used up, the umbrella picks up the rest, up to its own limit, which usually starts at $1 million.

It can also help with legal defense costs, which pile up quickly even when a claim has little merit. Depending on the carrier, an umbrella may respond to certain claims your underlying policies don't address, such as some libel or slander allegations. Policy language varies, so the details matter.

Louisiana's Minimum Auto Limits Leave Very Little Room

Louisiana requires drivers to carry at least 15/30/25 in liability coverage. That's $15,000 for one person's injuries, $30,000 total for everyone hurt in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Those minimums haven't changed since 2010.

Medical bills from a serious injury can pass $15,000 quickly, and plenty of pickups on Louisiana roads cost more than $25,000 to replace. Many families carry higher limits than the minimum, and they should, but even a strong auto policy has a ceiling. A multi-car wreck on I-10 near the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge or on I-12 heading into the North Shore can involve several injured people, lost wages, and long-term care. That's the kind of claim an umbrella is designed for.

Where Everyday Louisiana Life Creates Liability

Hosting is the most common one. Whether it's a game watch party in Carencro or a family birthday in Youngsville, guests on your property are your responsibility. A fall on the back steps, a dog bite, or an accident at the pool can lead to a claim larger than your homeowners liability limit.

Water and trail time adds more. Weekends on Lake Pontchartrain out of Mandeville, trips down the Vermilion River, and four-wheelers on family land around Maurice and Milton all bring passengers and speed into the picture. Boat and recreational vehicle policies carry their own liability limits, and an umbrella can stack on top of them when those policies meet the carrier's requirements.

Then there are new drivers. Adding a teenager to the policy is one of the most common reasons families in Broussard, Scott, and Duson ask us about umbrella coverage. Young drivers are still building experience, and one bad accident can produce a claim well beyond a standard auto limit.

Property you don't live in counts too. If you rent out a double in Uptown New Orleans or let friends use the family camp, those exposures should be reviewed with your umbrella in mind so nothing falls between policies.

What an Umbrella Won't Cover

An umbrella is liability coverage only. It won't repair your roof, replace your boat, or pay your own medical bills. Most personal umbrellas also exclude business activities, so if you run a company from home or drive for work, that exposure usually belongs on a commercial policy. Intentional acts aren't covered either.

Questions to Settle Before You Buy

Most carriers require your underlying auto and homeowners policies to carry certain liability limits before they'll write an umbrella, and those requirements are typically well above the state minimum. If your auto limits are low, plan on raising them as part of the process.

It also helps to list every driver, vehicle, boat, ATV, and property in the household so nothing is left outside the umbrella's reach. If you serve on a church or nonprofit board, ask whether the policy includes any coverage for that role. And if your income or assets have grown since your last review, your limit deserves another look.

Umbrella premiums are often lower than people expect for the amount of protection involved, which is a good reason to at least get a quote.

It's About More Than Net Worth

People tend to assume umbrella coverage is only for the wealthy. A large judgment doesn't stop at your savings account, though, and it can follow you for years. A young professional in Lafayette with a solid income and a new house has plenty worth protecting, even without a big investment portfolio.
