Preparing for the storm:
    • Designate an out-of-area contact that your family members can call if you are separated.
    • Place your insurance and other essential documents (e.g., birth certificates and vehicle registrations) in a waterproof bag and keep them with you.
    • If time permits, board up windows and place sandbags around your property.
    • Secure any loose items from your yard, like trash cans, lawn furniture, tools, etc.
    • Know where to go. Learn evacuation routes and contraflow procedures. Determine where you can stay and how you would get there if you need to evacuate. Find evacuation routes here.
    • Put together a go-bag disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first-aid supplies, medications, and copies of your critical information.
    • If you are not in an area where evacuation is advised and you decide to stay in your home, plan for adequate supplies in case you lose power and water for several days and are not able to leave due to flooding or obstructed roads.
If you're forced to evacuate:
    • Turn off breaker boxes before evacuating: This will help prevent electrical surges from destroying your appliances. Also, in the event of water infiltration, This step prevents shorts that can lead to fires.
    • Know how to shut off utilities, where gas pilots are located, and how the heating and air-conditioning systems work. If you have any questions, contact your local utility company.
    • Never drive through standing water. Underlying currents could carry your vehicle away or trap you in rising floodwater. Find an alternate route. Know your evacuation route and follow the directions of your state and local officials.
After the storm:
    • Inspect your property for damage, be safe!
