Halloween Is Saturday: A Quick Insurance Reminder for Louisiana Families

Written by Levi Kastner | Oct 29, 2026, 12:40:57 PM

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year. That means more parties, later nights, and a lot more kids on the street than a school night would bring.

In the subdivisions around Youngsville and Broussard, it usually means wagons, golf carts, and trailers full of kids moving house to house. In New Orleans, Halloween is practically its own season, with porches up and down Uptown dressed for the occasion and costumes spilling out of every bar in the Marigny. Wherever you are in south Louisiana, Saturday night is going to be busy.

Nobody wants an insurance lecture on Halloween, so here's the short version: a few things to check before the porch light goes on, and what your coverage typically does if something goes sideways.

Light the Path to Your Door

Most Halloween injuries at a home are simple trips and falls. A cracked step, a garden hose across the walk, an extension cord running to the inflatable, or wet steps after an evening shower. Kids in long costumes and masks can't see their feet very well, and they're moving fast.

If a trick-or-treater gets hurt on your property, your homeowners insurance typically responds in two ways. Medical payments coverage can help with smaller medical bills regardless of who was at fault. Personal liability coverage responds if you're found legally responsible. The easier fix is to turn on the porch light, clear the walkway, and tape down any cords before dark.

Skip the Real Candles

A candle in a jack-o'-lantern looks great right up until it tips into a hay bale or a dried corn stalk on a wooden porch. Battery-powered LED candles look almost the same and won't burn the house down.

Watch the extension cords too. Inflatables, fog machines, and string lights all plugged into one outlet can overload a circuit. Use outdoor-rated cords and spread the load. Fire is a covered peril on a standard homeowners policy, but it's not a claim anybody wants to file on Halloween night.

Keep the Dog Inside

The doorbell rings a hundred times. Strangers in masks keep reaching toward the door. Even the friendliest dog can get rattled by that, and dog bites are one of the more common liability claims on a homeowners policy.

Put the dog in a back room for the evening. It's also worth knowing that some policies limit or exclude coverage for certain breeds or for dogs with a bite history. If you're not sure where yours stands, now is a good time to ask.

Golf Carts, Side-by-Sides, and Trailer Rides

In a lot of Acadiana neighborhoods, trick-or-treating means a golf cart or a side-by-side pulling a trailer full of kids from street to street. It's one of the best parts of the night. It's also one of the biggest coverage questions we hear.

Homeowners policies typically offer only limited liability coverage for golf carts and off-road vehicles, often just on your own property. Once that cart or UTV is on a neighborhood street with kids riding along, your homeowners policy may not respond the way you'd expect. A recreational vehicle policy is usually what fills that gap. Before Saturday, check your coverage, check your parish or city rules about carts on public streets, keep an adult behind the wheel, and keep it slow.

Slow Down Saturday Night

Kids in dark costumes dart out between parked cars, and they aren't looking for you. A study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that pedestrian deaths run noticeably higher on Halloween evening than on comparable nights, with young children at the greatest risk.

Drive slowly through neighborhoods from dusk until the crowds thin out, put the phone away, and take extra care backing out of the driveway. If you're headed to a Halloween party, plan your ride home before you leave. Your auto insurance is there for accidents, but nobody wants to find out how it works on a night like this.

Hosting a Party?

A Saturday Halloween means a lot of house parties. More guests means more chances for a slip on the patio, a fall on the stairs, or a costume that gets too close to the tiki torch. If you're serving drinks, keep them away from anyone underage and make sure nobody drives home impaired.

A serious injury at a party can push past the liability limit on a homeowners policy fast. That's where an umbrella policy earns its keep. We talked about this earlier in the fall in Game Days, Boat Days, and New Drivers, and a Halloween party belongs on that same list.

Eggs, Pumpkins, and Pranks

Smashed pumpkins and egged siding are part of the night in some neighborhoods. Homeowners policies typically cover vandalism to your house and property, minus your deductible, though most egg damage costs less than the deductible to clean up.

Your car is a different story. Egg left on paint can damage the finish, so rinse it off as soon as you see it. If your car does get vandalized, comprehensive coverage on your auto policy is what typically responds. If you have a garage, Saturday night is a good night to use it. If you're heading out to a party, leave a few lights on.

A Quick Check Before the Weekend

Most of this comes down to a porch light, a clear walkway, a dog in the back room, and a little patience behind the wheel. If you're not sure how your coverage handles any of it, especially the golf cart, now is the time to find out.
